TORCH 4 Panel IgG is a panel of tests that screens for infectious diseases including Toxoplasmosis, Rubella, Herpes and Cytomegalovirus infection.
This test is ordered if you are exposed to certain infectious diseases or become ill while pregnant; or when the newborn shows any signs suggestive of such infections including mental retardation, deafness, heart defects, cataract, or jaundice.
Why is TORCH 4 Panel (IgG) done?
If you are pregnant (usually during the first trimester) or planning to get pregnant
If the child or infant shows signs or symptoms suggestive of infections included in the panel like deafness, seizures, heart defects, cataract, jaundice, low platelet count
Interpreting TORCH 4 Panel (IgG) results
Interpretations
A normal result is negative antibody in the blood and means that it is unlikely that the person tested has the infections
A positive result indicates high likelihood of infection with that microbe. IgM antibodies are present when their is current or recent infection. However, further testing must be done to confirm the results
The presence of IgG antibodies in pregnant woman usually indicate past infection
If both IgM and IgG antibodies are found in a newborn, it’s probably because antibodies in the mother have been transferred to the fetus through the placenta
