What is Hepatitis C Virus – Genotyping?
HCV (Hepatitis C Virus) genotype test is done to determine the type of HCV virus that has infected the patient. HCV infection is transmitted through blood, and mainly causes liver fibrosis, liver cirrhosis and cancer. HCV can be detected by tests like NAT (Nucleic acid testing) which detects the HCV genome in a specimen. Genotype 1 is the most common one. This test is done only after it is confirmed that the patient has HCV infection. It helps in deciding the appropriate antiviral therapy. The common symptoms are bleeding, fatigue, poor appetite, jaundice, dark-colored urine and swelling in the abdomen.
